Chapter 14
âHow are we doing with the preparations to go back to Prairie?â Heather asked.
âI anticipate weâll be ready,â Bobby said. âThe Earth bureaucracy has made some things difficult. Mr. Foy had quite a list of drugs and medications he wanted to have available and we canât just buy them. We had to get prescriptions from licensed veterinaries. It was the same across all the developed countries. Vets were afraid to provide them without a specific animal with an ear tag number and a case history to tie it all together. They can lose their license if any step of the regulations is skipped. Fortunately, some of the third-world countries arenât as fussy. We had no trouble buying small field equipment from Japan but getting them lifted to orbit was an ordeal. We had to partially disassemble them to meet weight and dimensional limits. Weâre doing a full tear-down when they get here anyway, so that was just a matter of carefully documenting the partial disassembly in Japan. The Hawaiian fellow, Nick, we hired as a temp is doing the rest of the tear-down here. He worked out very well and we hired him for at least a six-month gig.â
April looked up with sudden interest. âWhatâs this Nickâs last name?â she asked.
âNaito,â Bobby said. âIt doesnât sound very Hawaiian, does it?â
April was incredulous. âDonât you know who he is? Didnât Jeff tell you?â
âJeff hasnât come by to watch us disassembling the harvester and tractor. Iâve never had a chance to introduce Nick to him. Jeff canât involve himself with everything that needs to be done. There arenât enough hours in the day for him to be personally involved with everything. Itâs good that he can delegate and trust us to take care of certain things ourselves. Nick has been a self-starter and seems very intelligent. What do you mean by who he is? All I know is the temp agency sent him for a one-day evaluation and I was pleased to keep him.â
âJeff already knows him. Iâm not telling this well,â April said, frustrated. âNaito is, was I guess, the Hawaiian official who got Jeff and Love together on the island to hammer out our treaty with North America.
âOh. I donât pay much attention to politics,â Bobby admitted. âI wouldnât have remembered Love being North Americaâs guy if you hadnât just mentioned him. If he and Jeff know each other why did he hire through an agency?â
âI donât know. Itâs even stranger than that. He was my caretaker for my Hawaiian home. He sent me a message he had to quit, but he made sure one of his cousins took over to keep the place safe and occupied. But not a word to me that he was coming to the Moon. My neighbor from down there didnât say a word either. None of it makes sense,â April said.
âHe worked a government job and took care of your house too?â Bobby asked.
âHe was my caretaker when he was a revolutionary, long before they won and he got a respectable ministry position.
